Developmentally oriented counseling with young people in school health services

Abstract:

Aim
Epidemiological studies estimate that every fourth or fifth Norwegian adolescent is facing mental problems affecting daily functioning. Others emphasize the importance of easily accessible services. The objective of this project is to develop mental health counseling in high school health services. The project has a health promoting perspective, and aims at enhancing students’ participation in their own change processes.
Methods
To capture complexity and tie knowledge production close to practice, participatory action research (PAR) has been chosen as a strategy. Two high schools participated (2005-2007). The health services in both schools were staffed by public nurses and mental health professionals. The following methods were included: interviews with adolescents (n=46), participant observation during consultations (n=13), and focus groups with professionals (n=4).
